Het Celloconcert nr. 1 was Villa-Lobos' eerste grote orkestwerk. Vol jeugdige energie en met een eclectische stijl is het het geluid waarmee de componist zijn stem vond. Drie decennia later, op het hoogtepunt van zijn roem, laat Villa-Lobos zijn levendige verbeelding de vrije loop in de geïnspireerde melodieën en vloeiende stijl van Fantasia. Het niet minder inventieve en weelderig gescoorde Celloconcert nr. 2 uit 1953, gecomponeerd voor de Braziliaanse cellist Aldo Parisot, suggereert de eenzaamheid van de mens tegenover de uitgestrektheid van de natuur.
