RUSSIAN BALLADS

De 20e eeuw zag een overvloed aan opmerkelijke Russische cellisten die een uitgebreid repertoire van Sovjetcomponisten inspireerden. In de cellosonates van Sjostakovitsj en Prokofjev verkennen beide componisten het rijke en emotionele timbre van het instrument met expressieve subtiliteiten en bitterzoete emoties, naast hun typische vleugjes humor en ironie. De internationaal befaamde pianist Evgeny Kissin is onlangs teruggekeerd naar het componeren, en zijn Cellosonate is verwant aan een ballad in zijn terughoudendheid en introspectie.
