András Schiff (fortepiano)

In dit nieuwste hoofdstuk van András Schiffs voortdurende verkenning van de muziek van Franz Schubert, speelt de grote pianist de Vier Impromptus D 899, en composities uit 1828, het laatste jaar van Schuberts te korte leven: De Drie Stukken D 946 ("impromptus in alles behalve naam" noteert Misha Donat in het CD-boekje), de C-klein Sonate D 958 en de A-groot Sonate D 959. Schiff kiest opnieuw voor zijn fortepiano, gemaakt door Franz Brodmann in Wenen, rond 1820. "Deze is voor mij bij uitstek geschikt voor de klavierwerken van Schubert," heeft hij gezegd. Er is iets typisch Weens in zijn timbre, zijn tedere zachtheid, zijn melancholische cantabilità" Critici waren het met hem eens, ook unaniem in hun loftuitingen over Schiffs interpretaties: "Ik kan niemand van zijn kaliber bedenken die zowel de fortepiano als de moderne piano beheerst en die op beide zulke distinctie heeft getoond," schreef Stephen Plaistow in een Editor's Choice recensie in Gramophone. "In Schubert maakt Schiff aanspraak op soevereiniteit onder de spelers van vandaag, hij brengt de lezing en interpretatie van Schubert naar gebieden die anderen nog niet volledig hebben verkend"
