Avant-garde klassiekers voor strijkkwartet

Quatuor Diotima debuteert op Pentatone met een opname van de strijkkwartetten van Györgi Ligeti. Terwijl het tweede kwartet uit 1968 een avant-gardistische klassieker is, wordt het eerste uit 1953-54, "Metamorphoses nocturnes", vaak aangeduid als het zevende kwartet van Bartók, wat de continuïteit tussen deze twee Hongaarse meestercomponisten aangeeft. Ondanks nostalgische momenten bezit het al het wilde, avontuurlijke karakter van het latere kwartet. Tussen deze twee iconoclastische werken biedt het Andante en Allegretto uit 1950 een intiem moment van rust. De leden van Diotima hebben de opname van Ligeti's strijkkwartetten lang uitgesteld, geïntimideerd door hun muziekhistorische betekenis en de eisen die aan de spelers worden gesteld, maar nu is de tijd gekomen om dit fascinerende project voort te zetten en met de wereld te delen. Het kwartet is gefascineerd door de filmische kwaliteiten van Ligeti's muziek en het gebruik ervan in films, waaronder Stanley Kubrick's 2001 A Space Odyssey. De albumhoes is een eerbetoon aan dit filmicoon.
