Verfijnde weergave van een raadselachtige symfonie

Na hun veelgeprezen opname van Mahlers Vierde Symfonie vervolgen de Tsjechische Philharmonie en Semyon Bychkov hun Pentatone Mahler-cyclus met een vertolking van de Vijfde Symfonie van de componist. De Vijfde Symfonie markeert een belangrijk keerpunt in Mahlers symfonische productie, weg van het primaat van de vocale delen in zijn eerdere symfonieën. En hoewel de Vijfde, net als zijn voorgangers, een teleologie lijkt te volgen van duisternis naar licht, is het verloop ervan veel minder rechtlijnig en vol raadselachtige wendingen. Bychkovs uitzonderlijke oog voor detail en tempo maken hem een ideale gids door dit werk, terwijl de Tsjechische Philharmonie alle kleuren van Mahlers partituur weet te laten schitteren.
