After the great success of the Bach Cello Suites (GLO 5244), Quirine Viersen set sail for that other Mount Everest of solo cello repertoire: the Britten Cello Suites. The untimely death of her good friend and producer Paul Janse prevented her from editing and releasing the album two years ago, but now the time seemed right. Her tribute to the inspiring friendship shows how right Janse was in his assuming that this music fits Viersen like a glove...

Benjamin Britten schreef tussen 1964 en 1971 drie cellosuites voor Mstislav Rostropovitsj. Britten schiep er een heel eigen en indringende wereld mee die sindsdien steeds weer wacht op (her)ontdekking door musici en luisteraars. Ook de Nederlandse celliste Quirine Viersen moest Britten echt herontdekken. “Ik heb ze lang links laten liggen”, zegt ze nu. “Ze waren te abstract voor mij, ik kon er geen binding mee krijgen.” Toen ze zich na de opname van de Bachsuites afvroeg wat de volgende stap moest zijn, kwam Britten weer om de hoek kijken. “Omdat mijn goede vriend en producer Paul Janse het suggereerde, ben ik ze weer serieus gaan studeren. Ook heb ik Brittens biografie gelezen. En dat maakt het verschil. Ik heb de mens achter de muziek leren kennen en zijn eigen Engelse wereld ontdekt. Toen kon ik dat abstracte loslaten en alle emotie, liefde en passie terugvinden in zijn muziek.” En dat is precies wat deze cd is: een o zo menselijke biografie in drie cellosuites die van begin tot eind uitnodigt tot ademloos luisteren.
