De "Missa Salisburgensis à 53 voci" is een van de grootste miszettingen uit de barok. De Boheemse componist Biber, sinds 1670 in dienst van de aartsbisschop van Salzburg, creëerde het werk voor twee vocale en vier instrumentale koren (orkest) in de stijl van de Venetiaanse polychorale muziek. Vergelijkbaar met de San Marco kathedraal in Venetië, bood de Salzburger Dom de architectonische mogelijkheden om de musici op verschillende plaatsen in de kerkruimte te plaatsen en zo de luisteraar een "surround sound ervaring" te geven. De mis, die vroeger werd toegeschreven aan de componist Orazio Benevoli, werd vermoedelijk geschreven ter gelegenheid van het 1100-jarig bestaan van het bisdom Salzburg in 1682. In overeenstemming met de bijna kosmische dimensies van de compositie werd een imposante foto van de Helixnevel, zo'n 700 lichtjaar van de aarde en ook bekend als "Het oog van God", gekozen voor de omslagfoto.
