Gabriel Faurè beschouwde Siberië van Umberto Giordano als een van de meest interessante en unieke werken van het begin van de 20e eeuw. Het tragische verhaal van de opera gaat over Stephana, de courtisane van prins Alexis. Ze wordt verliefd op de onschuldige soldaat Vassili, die naar Siberië wordt gestuurd omdat hij de prins heeft vermoord. Stephana geeft haar luxueuze leven op om hem te volgen, maar kan niet ontsnappen aan haar verleden. Met zijn intense Russische sfeer en hartstochtelijk zwevende melodieën was Siberië Giordano's favoriete opera. Deze veelgeprezen Fiorentino productie kreeg talloze ovaties.
