Dit album is het zesde en laatste in een reeks van Respighi's werken, door BBC Music Magazine omschreven als "een van de beste overzichten van Respighi's orkestwerken ooit gepubliceerd door slechts één dirigent".

De immense populariteit van zijn "Romeinse Trilogie" overschaduwt nog steeds vele andere werken, waaronder bewerkingen van renaissance- en barokmuziek. Jammer, want dit is spannende muziek. Enerzijds getuigt het van zijn liefde voor "oude muziek", anderzijds zijn het minder muziekhistorische reconstructies dan "vrije transcripties voor orkest", zoals hij ze zelf noemde. De vier hier opgenomen suites, oorspronkelijk voor klavecimbel of luit, zijn daarvan uitstekende voorbeelden.
