Lully's Armide, voor het eerst opgevoerd in 1686, werd onmiddellijk een van de steunpilaren van het Parijse operarepertoire onder het Ancien Régime. Als reactie op het gelijknamige werk van Gluck uit 1777 zou het jaar daarop een gemoderniseerde versie van de klassieker worden opgevoerd. De bewerking van Louis-François Francœur (1738-1804), die harmonie, ritme, instrumentatie en zelfs melodische lijnen omvatte, werd echter niet uitgevoerd, en de partituur lag ongemerkt in de Bibliothèque Nationale. Hervé Niquet haalt dit even interessante als gedurfde experiment uit de vergetelheid.
