Rachmaninoffs Vespers op. 37 wekt de indruk van natuurlijkheid en eenvoud, maar in werkelijkheid is het complex en vernieuwend voor zijn tijd in de quasi-orchestrale behandeling van de stemmen. Simon-Pierre Bestion ontdekte het werk voor zichzelf toen hij in een koor zong, en het raakte hem destijds onmiddellijk emotioneel, wat ook tot uiting komt in zijn eigen opname op ALPHA CLASSICS.

De Vespers worden prachtig gezongen. De zangers van Bestion hebben een enorm scala aan kleuren (inclusief de lage bassen natuurlijk, maar ook de helderheid van de sopranen en alten maken hier indruk, en ...er hangt een gevoel van ongehaaste rust in deze aanpak.
