Buxtehude: Trio Sonatas Op. 2

Ensemble Arcangelo: Thomas Dunford, Sophie Gent, Jonathan Manson & Jonathan Cohen

Rond het midden van de jaren 1690 publiceerde Dieterich Buxtehude (ca. 1637-1707), in zijn gevorderde jaren, twee verzamelingen sonates in de fantastische stijl, die nu worden beschouwd als topwerken van de Duitse instrumentale muziek in de tweede helft van de 17e eeuw. Onder Stylus Phantasticus verstond men muziek met een bijna improvisatorisch karakter, gekenmerkt door een verrukkelijke onvoorspelbaarheid, een doeltreffende virtuositeit en een uitgesproken expressiviteit. Na hun opname van de Sonates op. 1 presenteren de musici van Arcangelo (Sophie Gent, Jonathan Manson, Thomas Dunford en Jonathan Cohen) hier de niet minder fascinerende Sonates op. 2 van Buxtehude.
