Deze 24 preludes en fuga's zijn zo nauw verbonden met de persoonlijkheid en de stijl van hun "officiële vertolkster" (Tatjana Nikolajeva) dat aan haar interpretatie bijna een soort finaliteitswaarde werd toegekend zonder verdere vragen te stellen. Toch heeft deze Opus 87 fascinerende antwoorden voor iedereen die de juiste vragen stelt. Het is dan ook zeker niet de minste verdienste van Alexander Melnikov dat hij het werk in zijn geheel benadert en ons zijn eigen, zeer muzikale oplossingen voorlegt.
