Mari Kodama presenteert 'New Paths', over de jonge Johannes Brahms en zijn fascinerende vriendschap met Clara en Robert Schumann. Het album ontleent zijn titel aan Robert Schumanns beroemde essay "Neue Bahnen", waarin hij de jonge Brahms aankondigde als de meest vooraanstaande muzikale stem van de toekomst. Op het programma staat Brahms' eerste pianosonate, zijn Variations on a Theme van Robert Schumann, Op. 9, evenals zijn Thema en variaties, Op. 18B, gemaakt op verzoek van Clara Schumann. Het laatste woord is aan Clara's bewerking van Roberts lied Widmung. New Paths verkent niet alleen de unieke band van deze drie opmerkelijke componisten, maar toont ook het energieke zelfvertrouwen van de jonge Brahms, zo anders dan zijn latere melancholie. Kodama voert deze werken uit op een splinternieuwe Yamaha-piano die bijna klinkt als een historisch instrument en veel dichter bij het klankideaal van Brahms komt. Mari Kodama is een van de meest buitengewone pianisten van onze tijd en heeft een indrukwekkende Pentatone-discografie, met Beethovens complete pianosonates (2003-2014), pianoconcerten van Loewe en Chopin (2003), Tchaikovsky Ballet Suites for Piano Duo (2016) , De Falla's Nights in the Gardens of Spain (2017), Martin?'s Concerto for Two Pianos (2018), Kaleidoscope, Beethoven Transcriptions en MON AMI Mon amour (beide 2020).
