On her PENTATONE debut Reine de coeur, star soprano Hanna-Elisabeth Müller brings the German and French art song traditions together, focusing on song cycles by Robert Schumann, Alexander von Zemlinsky and Francis Poulenc, accompanied by pianist Juliane Ruf. The album presents a highly personal anthology of songs that address love and loss, and the heights and depths of the human soul. While Schumann’s Sechs Gesänge Op. 107 and Sechs Gedichte und Requiem Op. 90 offer the quintessence of the Romantic German Lied, Zemlinsky’s turn-of-the-century Walzer-Gesänge introduce the listener to a later and less well-known chapter in the genre’s history. Poulenc’s La courte paille and Fiançailles pour rire provide an atmospheric, at times humoristic complement to the Weltschmerz of the German songs.

Hanna-Elisabeth Müller is among the most celebrated young sopranos of our times. Reine de coeur is the first album of her exclusive collaboration with PENTATONE. She works together with her regular accompanist, pianist Juliane Ruf.

"In haar voorwoord bij deze opname schrijft Hanna-Elisabeth Müller dat ze al lange tijd een album wilde programmeren rond de thema’s liefde en leven.
Een merkwaardige opmerking: een liedrecital waarin het níét om liefde en leven draait – dat zou nog eens wat zijn! Verrassender dan het thema zelf is de invulling die de zangeres eraan heeft gegeven. Dit fraaie recital is opgebouwd uit vijf korte, sterk contrasterende liedcycli. Het hart van het programma bestaat uit Zemlinsky’s Walzer-Gesänge opus 6, een cyclus van zes liederen die samen nog geen acht minuten duren. In deze miniaturen is de overrijpe romantiek van de latere Zemlinsky nog ver te zoeken. Müllers heldere sopraan treft feilloos het verlangen en de weemoed en wordt daarbij prachtig begeleid door Juliane Ruf. De cyclus wordt geflankeerd door La courte paille en Fiancailles pour rire. Met haar vlekkeloze Frans en perfecte intonatie is Müller geknipt voor Poulencs liederen, waarin naïveteit, absurditeit en melancholie elkaar afwisselen. Maar de hoogtepunten zijn Schumanns Sechs Gesänge opus 107 en Sechs Gedichte und Requiem opus 90, waarmee het programma opent, respectievelijk sluit. Deze bieden Müller de meeste gelegenheid tot innige tekstexpressie en het verkennen van de kleuren van haar prachtige stem."
