Jan Bartos (piano)

Before he was completely overwhelmed by love for composing, Leoš Janá?ek pursued a career as a virtuoso pianist. He was closely familiar with the instrument, which served for him to share his innermost emotions and feelings. Janá?ek wrote his first opus, Thema con variazioni, at the age of 26, when he was studying at the Leipzig Conservatory. The miniature piece A Recollection is one of his last scores. The composer conceived his three essential piano works, 1.X. 1905, On an Overgrown Path and In the Mist, between 1900 and 1912, which was a difficult phase in his life. They are perhaps the most personal, most intimate pieces he wrote. Janá?ek was inspired by the sound of the cimbalom, an instrument he often heard when collecting folk songs in Moravia.

The genes of the pianist Jan Bartoš evidently bear the traces of the ample musical tradition of his ancestors, including his grandfather, a cimbalom player. The legacy of folk music and the Silesian origin is what Janá?ek and Bartoš have in common. In his account of Janá?ek’s music, the pianist reveals a profound musicological insight, as well as a fascinating intuition – the inspiring integration of the heart and the brain, owing to which Bartoš’s previous Supraphon albums (Mozart – Concertos, SU 4234-2; Beethoven – Sonatas, SU 4252-2) have met with such great acclaim.

"Janácek wilde concertpianist worden, maar toch componeerde hij zo weinig solopianomuziek dat die op één cd gaat. Soms lijkt die ‘onpianistisch’, maar het niveau is hoog en de intense emotie weerspiegelt de tragedies in Janáceks leven. De Tsjechische pianist Jan Bartos is volkomen thuis in deze nu eens openlijk brandende, dan weer onderhuids broeiende atmosfeer. Als familielid van Lucie Bakesová die met Janácek Tsjechische volksmuziek onderzocht, heeft hij zelfs een lijntje naar de componist. Dat levert een prachtige cd op, waarop de innerlijke onrust van de beide pianocycli Op een overwoekerd pad en In de mist een oerspannende luisterervaring oplevert, juist door het natuurlijke spel van deze pianist die een rubato heel spontaan kan laten klinken. Van serie 2 van de eerstgenoemde reeks speelt Bartos de voltooide stukken (Andante, Allegretto), hij negeert het knutselwerk van de voltooiingsindustrie. Heel verstandig. Ook van de geniale cyclus In de mist, vol dromerige introspectie, aardsheid en volkselementen, heeft Bartos de veelvormige kern te pakken. De sonate 1.X.1905 ‘Op straat’, reflectie van een tragisch verlopen Praags oproer, komt er hartverscheurend uit. Alles aan deze cd deugt: repertoire, spel, opnamekwaliteit, en niet tevergeten de voortreffelijke toelichting in het cd-boekje. Onmisbaar, nu al."
