Gezien de maatschappelijke terughoudendheid en beperkingen ten aanzien van vrouwen in de muziek, is het bijna verbazingwekkend dat er in het verleden überhaupt vrouwelijke componisten waren. Clara Schumann en Fanny Mendelssohn hadden ook te lijden onder beperkingen, vooral na hun huwelijk. Wat zij onder deze allesbehalve gunstige omstandigheden wisten te bereiken, blijkt uit de opname door het Nash Ensemble van hun twee pianotrio's en het strijkkwartet van Fanny Mendelssohn. Hier horen we meesterwerken die het argument ontkrachten dat in die tijd vaak werd gehoord, namelijk dat vrouwen niet in staat zouden zijn tot zelfstandige creatieve activiteit.

Schumann, Clara:
 Piano Trio in G minor, Op. 17
