Stephen Hough (piano)

Dit album dankt zijn naam aan de gelijknamige vierde pianosonate van Stephen Hough. De vergankelijkheid van het leven is de rode draad die door het programma van de opname loopt. Naast het werk van Hough staat de tweede pianosonate van Frédéric Chopin centraal, met de beroemde Treurmars. De produktie is opgevat als een concertprogramma, dus idealiter moet het van begin tot eind worden beluisterd. In die zin zijn de laatste twee stukken misschien het best op te vatten als toegift-snoepjes. Beide zijn door Hough zelf geregeld.

How often do Liszt’s ‘Funérailles’ and Gounod’s ‘Ave Maria’ share the same programme? Life is nothing if not unpredictable.
