Alban Gerhardt weet te overtuigen met een aantrekkelijk vibrerende toon, een diepgaande muzikaliteit en een superieur technisch kunnen. Zijn geluid is onmiskenbaar en zijn interpretaties onderscheiden zich door de hoogste originaliteit. Op zijn tweede kamermuziek CD voor Hyperion, presenteert Gerhardt nu Max Reger. Naast de vier cellosonates bevat de CD ook de drie onbegeleide cellosuites uit 1915, die georiënteerd zijn op Bach en tot de moeilijkste solowerken voor dit instrument behoren.

Alban Gerhardt's diepgaande muzikaliteit en charisma hebben hem tot een van de meest gevraagde cellisten van zijn generatie gemaakt. Zijn uitbundige persoonlijkheid is aanwezig in al zijn uitvoeringen; hij is niettemin hartstochtelijk toegewijd aan de bedoelingen van de componist, en zijn opnames zijn altijd het resultaat van een intense persoonlijke reis naar elk aspect van de muziek. Gerhardt's omhelzing van Reger's cellosonates en -suites is dus zeer welkom. Pianist Markus Becker heeft twaalf cd's uitgebracht met de klaviermuziek van Reger en is een ideale vertolker. Reger's cellosonates en suites tonen alle facetten van deze complexe componist en individu. De hartstochtelijke toewijding van de componist aan de Duitse romantiek en zijn neo-klassieke inspiratiebronnen zijn hier beide aanwezig: de grote invloed van Brahms en vervolgens het bewust afleggen van die mantel ten overstaan van een complexe en progressieve stilistische vooruitgang. De sonates omspannen de duur van zijn carrière en culmineren in de late onbegeleide suites, waarvan de ambitie om J.S. Bach te evenaren zowel duidelijk als grotendeels vervuld is. De duo-sonates vereisen - en krijgen in deze opname - niet alleen een cellist met een ongewoon inlevingsvermogen en bravoure, maar ook een eersteklas pianist. Dit is fascinerend en moeilijk repertoire, prachtig uitgevoerd en opgenomen.

"Max Reger is often blamed for thickness of musical texture, but although the piano-writing here is certainly prolix, the first two sonatas are imbued with a Brahmsian/classical romanticism and a virility which keeps the music thoroughly alive. The First Sonata surges passionately and heroically at the opening yet the touching second subject sighs very personally, the Adagio 'congran affetto' is gently lyrical and the finale is skittish. The Second Sonata also sails off agitato and has a brilliant but more muted Scherzo and an engaging Trio. An Intermezzo replaces the slow movement and the finale is a graceful grazioso. The last two sonatas are more mature, major works in which Reger has left Brahms behind and found his own voice. The highlight of No 3 is a substantial set of variations, Busoni's speciality, and the final sonata is even more impressive, with the cello introducing a kind of motto theme; the melodic writing in the secondary material is characteristically chromatic. There follows a whimsical, tarantella-like Scherzo, a warmly expressive slow movement and an engaging Allegretto con grazia finale. The Cello Suites are in a direct line from Bach, although not collections of Baroque dances but three- or four-movement works. No 1 ends with a jolly fugue and No 2 includes both a Gavotte and a Gigue. Easily the finest is the Third with its richly sustained, intensely melodic Prelude, a brilliantly contrasted Scherzo and another appealing set of variations for its finale. This is a stimulating package, very well played: both artists produce the passionate response demanded of them. Alban Gerhardt has a warm, resonant middle register and Markus Becker is well able to undertake the music's considerable virtuosity. The recording is vivid and clear."
