Daniil Trifonov (piano)

Daniil Trifonovs laatste album, opgenomen met Valery Gergiev en het Mariinsky Orchestra, herinnert aan een tijd waarin Russische muzikanten, dichters, beeldend kunstenaars, toneelschrijvers en artiesten tot de meest originele ter wereld behoorden. Silver Age illustreert de artistieke durf en schittering van een turbulente periode in het land met werken van de meest avant-gardistische componisten.

Het programma van de pianist legt de toekomstgerichte, regelrechte energie vast van baanbrekende werken van drie ongewoon capabele componisten. Het laat ook zien hoe typische elementen uit de Zilveren Eeuw, zoals ironie en interesse in de volkscultuur of ideeën uit het verleden, naar voren komen in Prokofjevs latere composities, bijvoorbeeld in zijn muziek voor Assepoester en de Pianosonate nr. 8, werken uit de rijpe periode, waarin hij opnieuw de muzikale idealen nastreeft die ooit zijn reputatie als iconoclastische jonge componist en pianist hebben gevestigd.

Bovenal legt Trifonovs selectie de creatieve diversiteit van dit korte maar explosieve culturele moment vast. "Scriabin", zegt Trifonov, "wilde alle esthetische ervaringen verenigen in een enkele, mystieke, muzikale visie; Stravinsky verenigde de kunsten door ballet radicaal te herdefiniëren; en Prokofieff wendde zich tot film als een complete, state-of-the-art verbinding van de zintuigen De Russische Zilveren Eeuw maakte de weg vrij voor toekomstige artistieke ontwikkelingen, en zijn geest wordt in deze nieuwe opname terecht gevierd.

Daniil Trifonov’s new album, Silver Age , recorded with Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra, recalls a time when Russia’s composers, poets, artists, dramatists and star performers were among the most original anywhere in the world. It illustrates the artistic audacity and brilliance of a turbulent era in the country’s history with works by three of its most pioneering composers: Scriabin’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in F sharp minor Op.20, Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No.2 in G minor Op.16 and Stravinsky’s Three Movements from Petrushka . The tracklist also comprises Stravinsky’s Serenade and excerpts from the composer’s piano suite version of The Firebird , together with Prokofiev’s Sarcasmes Op.17, Piano Sonata No.8 in B flat major Op.84 and the “Gavotte” from Cinderella Op.95 No.2

The Scriabin Concerto seems to me particularly successful, because Trifonov has a fine instinct for its ebb and flow of moods...Prokofiev’s monstrously demanding Second Concerto sees him completely in his element so far as hyper-virtuosity is concerned...With the Eighth Sonata I have more concerns. In general Trifonov has difficulty keeping his inner agitation in check."
